Part One:

I grew up just outside of Dayton, Ohio, in a typical suburban American town. Much of my family still lives there, but I have been moving around the country since I graduated from high school in 1991.

I started by going to Colorado a few weeks after high school to begin an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy. I stayed for a few months and then left—a few weeks after basic training ended and classes began. I began my college education (in Exercise Science) at the University of South Carolina a few days later.

After two years in South Carolina, I transferred to Miami University (Ohio) to complete my B. S. in Exercise Science, graduating in 1995. I continued at Miami for a semester as a graduate teaching assistant in Exercise Physiology, and then left Ohio again, this time to study physiology at the University of Arizona. I completed my M. S. in Physiological Sciences in 1999. During my time at the University of Arizona, I taught anatomy, physiology, and exercise physiology labs and lectures and was a research assistant in a metabolism lab.

Throughout my life, I was an avid cyclist, mountain biker, triathlete, hiker, and skier. I always loved the outdoor adventure (adrenaline) sports the most. During college, I also enjoyed teaching, coaching, and training athletes. While in graduate school at Arizona, I became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and I worked designing and supervising exercise programs at the University of Arizona Recreation Center, a cardiac rehab center, and at various fitness clubs. I enjoyed the work, but my passion was physiological sciences, and my ultimate goal was a career in academia—teaching and research.

In early 1999, I accepted a fellowship position (physiology research and teaching) in the University of California, San Diego's Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program. Eager to begin my doctoral studies and research, I moved to San Diego early that summer. I was so excited to live in San Diego!
